AB6IX is undoubtedly one of the most popular rookie groups in the K-pop arena now. Despite making their debut only in May this year, they’ve captured eyeballs, topped the charts and won accolades in the short span of half a year. In fact, they have gotten attention even before their debut.

That’s because four of the members, Lee Daehwi, Park Woojin, Lim Youngmin and Kim Donghyun had joined season 2 of Produce 101. The former two made it to the final line-up of Wanna One, while the latter two went on to form a duo, MXM. After Wanna One‘s contract expired, the four of them were joined by Jeon Woong to form AB6IX.

Despite their success, the group remains humble as they fielded the media’s questions when they were in town for Starhub Night of Stars. Woojin, who is currently recovering from an injury, was absent from the event.

Which member has changed the most since you debuted?

I think everyone changed in a good way because, you know, there are a lot of people watching us and thinking of us as their idols. So we always pay attention to our manners, so we changed in a good way.

It’s not the first time AB6IX is in Singapore. Is there any difference this time round?

Youngmin: Previously, we have had a fan meeting when we came to Singapore, but it is our first time being invited to an awards ceremony with local and other international singers.

Were there any difficulties you faced coming together from Wanna One and MXM?

Daehwi: Not at all because the members have been practising together (as trainees) for a long time.

How do you think you guys stand out from the rest of the boy bands today?

Daehwi: We make our own songs and we participate in our whole total album. I think that’s our major difference.

What were the most memorable moments from your recent concert?

Donghyun: While preparing for the concert, we all got nervous and worried because we wanted to show awesome and impressive performance to the audience. We were worried what if the fans got disappointed in the first concert. However, after the concert, I felt that we could have done it better. We finished our concert thinking that next time we can show you a lot more than this.

You’ve been topping charts. Does it put the pressure on you to keep the momentum going?

Youngmin: We had a successfully debut this year getting a lot of attention—even before our debut. We feel good about the high expectations and attentions, but at the same time we feel a burden to have great outcomes to meet those expectations. We will consider that burden as our responsibility and do our best to always show you the better performance.

Can you talk about your latest song, “Blind For Love”?

Daehwi: There is a line that goes ‘a child blind for love’. When the phrase first came to my mind… as you know, we as idols, are here because we are blinded for fan’s love. So, we wanted to express this in the song.

Daehwi, where do you get your songwriting inspirations from?

Daehwi: I often get it from my friends. I really talk with my friends a lot. I love talking, so I get inspired by them. And actually “Breathe” the first title song was inspired by our CEO Rhymer. He gave me the idea “Breathe”. And “Blind Our Love” was inspired by our fans. Next album maybe from myself?

How did Rhymer inspire you for “Breathe”?

Daehwi: He actually wanted to talk about the weather. I was thinking about how I should describe and talk about weather in a good way. And I thought of a keyword “breathe”. That’s how the song came.

Which Singapore foods do you want to try?

Daehwi: Chilli crab! We actually tried it yesterday. And morning glory (kangkong). The green vegetable stuff. That’s good! And… what is that? It is something like galbi-tang… Bak kut teh!

What do you do to recharge?

Donghyun: I try to sleep well these days because we have back-to-back activities. After a short break, in order to show the best condition at the stage, sleeping well should be the top priority.

What are your New Year resolutions?

Woong: I’m thinking of working out a bit so that next year I can show you something different from this year. I’d like to show you a sexier look… more muscles?

What new projects can we expect from you in 2020?

Daehwi: We’re planning a world tour next year and we probably are gonna release our new album.
