BTS made history yesterday with their win at the Billboard Awards, thanks to the hard work that their fans put in to vote for them. They became the first Korean act to receive an accolade from the awards show in the fan-voted Top Social Artist category.

The Korean boy band was up against Justin Bieber, who has picked up six awards in the same category since 2011, Selena Gomez, Shawn Mendes and Ariana Grande.

While fans were ecstatic for the boys’ win, others not only started questioning who the guys were, but also threw in a few racist remarks into the mix.

Most of the other tweets featured on various websites have since been deleted or made private, but the comments were not any kinder.

BTS fans were quick to jump to their defense, pointing out that the fact that this was not only a milestone win for the group, but also for Asian representation on the global music scene.

And we have to admit how true that is. You don’t see anyone complaining when England’s Adele picks up the awards, do you?

One Twitter user, @mokatbah, who has since deleted her tweet, even went as far as claiming that Korean fans have nothing better to do than vote multiple times a day, and that you don’t see an American participating in a Korean awards show. Clearly, this person has never watched the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Black Eyed Peas, John Legend and Usher (all Americans, the last time we checked) have all picked up the Best International Artist trophy.
