It’s been a while since fans of Girls’ Generation has seen former member Jessica Jung in Singapore. Unlike the previous times when she flew in for concerts and award shows, her agenda this time round was a bit different: She stopped by to launch her fashion label, BLANC & ECLARE, which is retailing at Salon by Surrender at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
The petite starlet came to the media conference dressed casually in her brand’s apparels – a sailor top and a pair of jeans. The top, she revealed, was the brand’s best-selling T-shirt.
The 26-year-old fielded questions from the media with the confidence of someone who has been in front of the camera for almost a decade. We got the low-down on her design inpos and label.
How do you get your inspiration for your designs?
I get my inspiration by travelling. I love travelling to different cities and experiencing different cultures. All cultures have distinct colours… it really helps inspire me. Another big inspiration is my mother. She’s very classy and elegant. I’ve always wanted to be like her when I grow up.
What’s unique about BLANC & ECLARE?
Ever since I was a little girl, I loved fashion and I wanted to do something related to fashion. I launched this denim line because … I wear [denim] every day. I wanted to share with the world my sense of style.
Tell us more about the brand’s philosophy, “Less is more.”
The statement “less is more” just describes the brand and describes me as well. I don’t like to overdo things. I like to keep everything very simple and classic. My brand has a classic aesthetic with a little twist of cool details.
What’s your fave piece from the collection?
My favourite piece is high-waist skinny jeans called Manhattan. It comes in two colours. I think it’s awesome because the fit is [for] Asian fit and it holds the body perfectly, so the silhouette looks awesome. It’s very comfortable. Plus, because it’s high-waist, your legs look much longer, so it’s amazing.
You have a collection of sunglasses and accessories. What’s the inspiration behind those designs?
The inspiration behind the sunglasses are the cities that I love and the cities I’ve been to. For example, Paris is cat-eye – it’s more elegant, and Shanghai is like round-shaped. There isn’t a Singapore yet (laughs) but it’s coming soon! We’re working on our new designs, so I hope you guys look forward to it.
You’re a very successful fashion designer now. What are the pros and cons of being independent?
You can make the decisions on your own, and you can work with your team. I have a great team of people and staff around me. It’s easier to communicate and work things out. I don’t know about cons! I haven’t seen any cons.
Do you have plans to collaborate with your sister (Krystal from f(x))?
Whenever I’m designing, my sister tells me a lot of tips. I would ask her, “What kind of jeans do you like? What T-shirts do you like?” And she’d go, “Oh, I wanna wear something like this!” We communicate a lot to make and produce the designs. I think it’s gonna be like that [from now on], and maybe some time in the future, we can actually do a collaboration. BLANC & ECLARE X Krystal!
