You know a group is going places when they are invited to attend one of the most talked-about awards shows. K-pop boy group BTS just confirmed their attendance for Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) this year.
The septet, who is contending for the Top Social Artist award, is the first K-pop act to be nominated for the BBMAs.
And they’re facing some serious competition – their contenders include top global acts such as Justin Bieber, who has 86.2 million followers on Instagram, and Selena Gomez, whose Instagram photos dominated the most-liked list last year, which is hardly surprising, considering she has 119 million followers.
However, the criteria to win is not the number of followers the artist has on social media – rather, it’s a fan-voted category, so it definitely shows the prowess of the respective fandoms.
Since the category was introduced in 2011, Justin Bieber has been sweeping the awards every year. It’s not clear if BTS, who is nominated for the first time ever alongside Shawn Mendes, will be the one to break his winning streak. After all, the group just wrapped up a successful US tour, proving that they’re popular beyond Asia. And if you’ve been on Twitter for the past weeks, you might have noticed that #방탄소년단 (the group’s name in Korean) and #BTSBBMAs have been trending since BBMAs announced the nominees.

Of course, Beliebers (Justin’s fans) are also doing their best to help him clinch the award again by including #JustinBBMAs in almost every tweet.
But if you’re hoping to let your faves win, don’t just hashtag – vote on this website. As to who will take home the crown, we’ll just have to wait till the awards show on May 21, 2017 to find out.
