The internet went nuts last night when news broke out that according to a new rule passed by China’s General Office of Broadcasting & Television, Korean celebrities will be prohibited from having activities in China.

Initial reports also stated that new restrictions meant Korean acts can only hold concerts to a crowd of no more than 10,000.

The move is said to be a politically-driven one, speculated to have stemmed from South Korea’s decision to deploy a Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system.

However, a new report from Sina stated that it is unlikely to be a ban, but rather, tight restrictions. Industry practitioners have yet to receive official notice, but EXO’s Shanghai concert in August is speculated to have been cancelled due to the rule. In the past two years, EXO has held 19 concerts in Mainland China, and although the group has wrapped up the Seoul leg of their third tour, most of the concert dates in China have yet to be confirmed.

China is one of the largest fan bases for Hallyu stars, and their popularity in the country have earned them numerous projects and product endorsements.
