Since their rapid rise to fame in recent years, Korean pop group BTS has been breaking records left and right.
They became the first Korean artist to bag a Billboard Music Award, and then went on to appear on various American TV shows.
Back in their home country, they’ve been breaking records too. Their previous album, Love Yourself: Her, set the record for having the highest number of first week sales last year.
This year, they broke their own record with their latest album Love Yourself: Tear, which sold a million copies in its first week of release, according to the Hanteo chart. In fact, this was the first album to have sold a million copies in one week since Hanteo chart was first established in 1993.
This is the band’s second one-million-seller, with the first being their previous album, which sold 1.2 million copies in 13 days.

The South Korean music industry has been facing touch competitions from online streaming – both legal and illegal sources – and album sales for physical copies has been dismal. It was only five years ago that EXO broke the drought with their debut album – they became the first act in 12 years to sell a million copies since Kim Gun Mo and g.o.d achieved the feat in 2001.
BTS is now known as a double-million seller. The group recently went to America for Billboard Music Awards, where they took home the trophy for Top Social Artist for the second year in the row. This time round, they also performed at the awards show, giving fans a first look – and listen – at their latest single, “Fake Love”.
The boys also made their second appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, where they got scared out of their wits (Jungkook deserves a special mention for maintaining his composure).
