It’s official: Disney has found the new Mulan. The studio just announced that Chinese actress Liu Yifei will be playing the character of the female warrior in the new live-action movie.
Reports have it that she was chosen after a year-long hunt for a Chinese actress that knows martial arts skills, speaks English and has “star quality”.
Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, moved to New York at 11 and can speak English – she has even spoken the language in films. While she is no martial artist, she revealed in an interview that she picked up a bit of wushu while filming wuxia dramas and movies.
However, not everyone is pleased with Disney’s choice. According to Forbes, some Chinese netizens have questioned the studio’s choice, claiming that the actress is known for her poor acting skills and calling her a “box office poison”.
Others, however, backed Disney up, stating that the studio must have done extensive research before casting Yifei.
The movie is slated for a 2019 release.
