While Kate Middleton chose to do her own makeup for her wedding, Meghan Markle enlisted the help of a professional for her big day. But while most people expected her to turn up all glammed up like she’s walking the red carpet at Met Gala, the actress – now Duchess of Sussex – went for a more natural look. Loved how she looked like at the royal wedding? Here’s how to recreate her makeup look and hairstyle.

The Makeup

Lydia Sellers has made over Megan’s face many a time, including prepping the Suits star for one of her best friend’s weddings.

“She’s so chic and classic,” says Lydia, who’s also an ambassador for Iconic London, commenting on Meghan’s wedding day make-up. “I knew she’d stick to something authentic and natural – and that’s this look to a T. It’s all about her skin and her freckles. Subdued glamour is her signature look.”

For anyone wanting to replicate Meghan’s classic style, Sellers recommends the following.

1. Skin

“Prepping the skin is really important. I love Iconic Prep-Set-Glow, $39, for the night before. It’s a nourishing spritz with a light glow. The following morning, a great moisturiser is key and it’s important to keep the foundation dewy and fresh – making sure it looks and feels like skin. I like to use a damp beauty blender sponge to keep it supple. When I work with Meghan, I don’t use a ton of powder on her face, it’s just the T-zone and under the eyes, to make sure the concealer is set.”

Recommended product: “I love the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, $82.80, iShopChangi, because it doesn’t go matte – ever. It stays dewy and glowy, and looks and feels like skin.”

2. Cheeks

“For the highlight and blush, creams go on fresh and you can easily layer them for pigment. They don’t sit on the pores like a powder would. This look is all about making sure her skin is shining.”

Recommended product: “In the past, we’ve used Nars Orgasm Blush, $52, a lot, because it has a pink pigment to it, but also an illuminating effect.”

3. Eyes

“It looks like she has a subdued bronzy, smokey eye – which she wears a lot. She’s kept to very earthy tones. I know Meghan likes to layer on mascara, so I’m sure that was part of her routine – maybe popping on a few individual lashes to make sure that her upper lashes were lengthened and really opening up the eye.”

Recommended products: “I would use the Iconic Boom Lash Mascara, $33, because it’s really amazing – it lengthens and gives a lot of volume. I also love Tom Ford cream eyeshadows, because they go on like a cream but dry like a powder. Meghan loves the MAC Teddy Eye Kohl pencil for the inner water line, to give a bronze glow.”

4. Lips

“It looks to me as if she’s gone for her natural lip colour. I think she’s wearing a very simple balm, rather than lipstick.”

The Hair

Meghan is known for her fabulous long hair, but for her wedding day, she wore an entirely new style, her tresses gathered in a low bun and set off with a diamond bandeau tiara.

Meghan’s simple-looking hair do matched her demure white gown. The effect as she walked down the aisle of St George’s Chapel was perfectly romantic.

Andrew John, director at Percy & Reed’s salon in London’s West End, says of her hair: “Meghan is a true modern princess, she has natural grace and really knows her own style. The hair is stunning and it looks like it’s been curled and pinned into a low updo.

“She was always going to look amazing, however she decided to wear her hair, but I think she’s gone for something that’s effortlessly elegant and it really shows her true natural beauty.

“This is a look that other brides could definitely achieve easily. Ideally it would work better on longer curly hair, but most hair types could achieve something similar. I’m sure it will now become a trend we see more and more of.”

Here, Andrew explains how you can recreate Meghan’s gorgeous wedding-day hair yourself.

1. On your wedding day, more than ever, you want hair to stay in place for the whole day, so it’s essential to use a great primer such as Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Balm, $40, to prep the hair whilst wet, so your style lasts all day, and also to control any frizz.

2. Then use a wide-toothed comb to apply Percy & Reed Abundantly Bouncy Volumising Mousse, $26, to give the hair some extra lift at the roots and long-lasting volume. Even if you then pin the hair up, you still want the initial volume to make the curls appear fuller and thicker.

3. Spray Percy & Reed The Perfect Blow Dry Makeover Spray, $26, all over and blow-dry the hair straight first, then tong hair using a large barrel tong, so it has a nice texture to it. For longer, lasting hold, spray each individual section with Percy & Reed Surprisingly Strong Extra Hold Hairspray, $26.

4. Place hair in a centre-parting and bring it back to be pinned at the bottom of the neck, shaping each section into soft, formed waves.
