When Korean drama Boys Over Flowers’ popularity skyrocketed in 2009, K-pop boyband SS501’s fame also went through the roof.
Apart from the leader of the group, Kim Hyun Joong, who was acting as everyone’s favourite character Yoon Ji Hoo, the other three members of the boyband formed a project group and got their claim to fame after singing the drama’s soundtrack, “Because I’m Stupid”.
The song proved to be one of the band’s greatest hits to date, clinching numerous awards including Best OST Award and Best TV Drama Song of the Year.
Need a refresher? Here’s the song.
The good news is, you can now see the trio perform again. Kim Kyu Jong, Heo Young Saeng and Kim Hyung Jun have banded together to form a group, Double S 301. Their mini-album, Eternal 5 (which is presumably a nod to the original quintet), will drop on February 16.
The trio is signed on to CI Entertainment, who released the first teaser video for their comeback last night.
The five members have always spoken positively about a reunion even after they went their separate ways after their contract with DSP Entertainment ended in 2010.
However, that proved to be a challenge as each member was busy with their solo endeavour: Hyun Joong pursued acting, Jung Min acted in musicals and was in a legal dispute with his agency, CNR Media, while the trio released solo albums.
Shortly after, they had to fulfil their mandatory military service. In fact, Hyun Joong is still serving in the army while entangled in a legal battle with the mother of his baby.
We might not be able to see the quintet perform together anytime soon, but for now, we’ll take what we have and await Double S 301’s music.
In the meantime, enjoy #FBF with SS501’s last song as a fivesome, “Love Ya”.
