As the person with the most Instagram followers (the number currently sits at 133 million), Selena Gomez is the undisputed Queen of the Gram. But she’s had her fair share of struggles with the app — she’s talked about how she deletes it from time to time, and in December suddenly made her account private (it’s now public again). Last month, she unfollowed more than 200 of her friends’ and fellow celebs’ accounts.
It’s clear that the 25-year-old has a bit of a love-hate relationship with the social media platform, and this is something she addresses in the March 2018 issue of Harpers Bazaar.
“I have a complex relationship with Instagram, to say the least. It has given me a voice amid all the noise of people trying to narrate my life for me and allows me to say, “Hey, I’m gonna post this, and this is gonna take care of the 1,200 stories that people think are interesting but actually aren’t, and aren’t even true,” she said to 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford, who interviewed her for the piece.
“So it empowers me in that way because it’s my words and my voice and my truth… but in a lot of ways it’s given young people, myself included, a false representation of what’s important,” she added.
“So, yeah, it’s a complex relationship. Probably one of my most difficult relationships.”
The singer and actress also mentioned that while she still battles certain mental health issues, she’s “OK” with working on them.
“I’ve had a lot of issues with depression and anxiety, and I’ve been very vocal about it, but it’s not something I feel I’ll ever overcome,” she said.
“There won’t be a day when I’m like, “Here I am in a pretty dress—I won!” I think it’s a battle I’m gonna have to face for the rest of my life, and I’m okay with that because I know that I’m choosing myself over anything else.”

The home I grew up in, from birth to 13… (no one was home when I knocked this time lol) I visit this place every chance I get. In many ways it very well could have been better than my life today, but I’m grateful for a voice that can enable change today. Even when I don’t know how to do it well or actually want it. I love you Grand Prairie. Thank you. ❤️
