SHINee’s Jonghyun’s death has sent shockwaves across the industry. The 27-year-old took his own life two days ago, leaving a suicide note in the hands of a friend, which cited the reason for his departure.
Apart from his family, he also leaves behind his fellow SHINee members, his fans and his friends. Among them is Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, who is known to share a close sibling-like relationship with Jonghyun.
Like Jonghyun, Taeyeon has spoken openly about coping with depression. Their recent duet, “Lonely”, touches on the topic.
The Girls’ Generation leader revealed in her tribute post to Jonghyun last night that the late SHINee singer wrote the song with her in mind.
She wrote, “I still remember you told me you wrote ‘Lonely’ while thinking of me. We’re alike, aren’t we? And similar. I know how you felt.”
The song, which was released earlier this year, took the Number One spot again amidst news of Jonghyun’s death.

“It’s you, and there’s no one who won’t love you if there’s a different you. I really like you, and love you, I want to give you a pat on the back and hug you one more time. I could have done that, so I hate that I’m regretting it for missing the chance to do that. It’s so sad and wasteful, our precious Jonghyun.
When I call you, you always say “Yes!” in a high tone. I miss Jonghyun a lot.
I’m sorry that I couldn’t hug you a lot, I love you and thank you. I still remember you told me you wrote “Lonely” while thinking of me. We’re alike, aren’t we? And similar. I know how you felt. The most unique, cool and wonderful in my life, Kim Jonghyun, I miss you and love you.
You’ve worked really hard.
I won’t let you be lonely.”
