After four years, Taylor Swift has finally sought redress against a former radio DJ whom she claimed had groped her butt while taking a photo.
The singer had complained to his company, which led to his dismissal from the station. The DJ had then sued Taylor over loss of earnings, while the singer counter-sued for sexual assault. She asked for US$1 ($1.36) in damages.
Today, she won the case against the former DJ and was awarded that amount. Her victory doesn’t demonstrate her privilege – it symbolises hope for victims of sexual assault who might think they can’t defend themselves. And Taylor is using her privilege to fight for this.
She said in a statement, while thanking the judge, jury and her legal team for “fighting for me and anyone who feels silenced by a sexual assault, and especially anyone who offered their support throughout this four-year ordeal and two-year long trial process.”

She added, “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this.”
“My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Therefore, I will be making donations in the near future to multiple organisations that help sexual assault victims defend themselves.”
Thank you, Taylor!
