If your skin resembles an oil vat that’s liable to erupt into acne spots at any given time, the last thing you should do is irritate it by using a harsh facial scrub. This led me on a long search for an exfoliator that’s suitable for my acne-prone skin, as most facial scrubs are usually too abrasive. Thankfully, I got to try Suisai’s Beauty Clear Powder. CLEO Clear Skin Awards 2019 Winner for Best Exfoliator for Acne-prone Skin, it’s an exfoliating wash that’s tailor-made for my skin type.

The product

Inspired by Japan’s heritage of embracing fermentation techniques, Suisai’s Beauty Clear Powder was developed by beauty giant Kanebo to leverage the gentle yet effective cleansing, hydrating and enriching power of amino acid and enzyme by-products produced during the fermentation process.

Suisai Beauty Clear Powder, $27 (32 capsules per pack)

Add the fact that it also reduces roughness, improves texture and tightens pores, and it’s no surprise that Suisai’s star product has been voted the top facial wash in Japan.

Tried and tested

I have acne-prone skin, which means I’m always dealing with clogged and enlarged pores, so my idea of the perfect exfoliator is one that can eliminate all that trapped dirt and debris without being harsh on the skin.

Suisai’s Beauty Clear Powder is packaged into tiny capsules. I must admit I was a bit sceptical at first—not only because I’ve never used a product in this format before, but also because the fine powder granules didn’t seem very scrub-like at all. However, my impression changed once I added water, as it lathered into a rich, bouncy foam almost immediately.

Despite the lack of exfoliating granules, the foam gently yet effectively removed excess oil and any residual makeup I might have missed with my facial wipes. My face felt fresh and clean upon rinse-off, with none of that tightness associated with dry, over-exfoliated skin.

The convenient, single-use capsule format also makes it great for when you’re out and about or travelling. I put it to the test on a nine-day trip to Australia, where I used it as my daily face wash since its exfoliating action is exceptionally gentle. Sure enough, it didn’t aggravate my acne-prone skin or existing blemishes. This road test has convinced me to keep using it to see if it will ease my regular breakouts. Fingers crossed!

The CLEO verdict

Hands down the best exfoliating wash I’ve ever tried, the Suisai Beauty Clear Powder does what it says on the tin and has been a fab addition to my acne-busting skincare routine. I can also easily see myself re-purchasing it whenever I’m planning to go away, be it for a vacay or a staycay.
